Your Turn To Shine

LESSON 8 ASSIGNMENT: BASIC WEB PAGE CREATION

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a WYSIWYG editor?

The Advantages of WYSIWYG HTML editors

  •  easy
  • fast
  •  no special skills required
  • you can design a site without having any programming knowledge
  •  Anyone can create web sites and put them online
  • Create web sites quickly
  • Provide a platform to start learn HTML
  • Its great fun to create web pages this way. You can do it yourself, experimenting with colors and layouts. The web page is likely to be unique, unless you are trying to clone another web page. You can stretch your imagination.
  •  It’s faster and easier to create web pages. You can make changes to a page layout by simply dragging the objects to their new positions.
  •  You can make changes to content (text or images) in WYSIWYG editor, instead of searching for and inserting between HTML tags, or using a complex content management system.
  •  WYSIWYG software runs on any windows computer.
  • You can also create background images on fly.
  • They are easy to use, so even people who have no knowledge of HTML can use them to create their websites.
  • Gives you more creative control as you get to focus more on what the design looks like instead of what the HTML code looks like.
  • Wikis are easy to use and learn.
  • Wikis are instantaneous so there is no need to wait for a publisher to create a new edition or update information
  • A rich text editor offers a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) interface, facilitating the formatting and layout of content.
  • Non-technical users have access to the power of web publishing.
  • There are a wide range of open source software wiki’s to choose from so licensing costs shouldn’t be a barrier to installing an institutional wiki.
  • Anyone can edit.

The Disadvantages of WYSIWYG HTML editors

  • It takes as long to learn how to use them as to learn how to program, and, worst of all:
  •  You will get stuck in impossible dead ends,
  • You will have not learned ANYTHING about programming,
  • You will be classified as a “perpetual amateur” (and never be taken seriously).
  • A lot of HTML code churned out by the editors is superfluous which makes the web pages bulky in file size and as you will know, a large file downloads slowly that a smaller one. Also search engines need to wade through all this code to get to the meat of the page – the actual text contents.
  • FYI, the ALT text is used by search engines and thus it’s a good idea to have your chosen keywords appear there.
Another example is the heading tags of a web page. These are very important from a search engine’s point of view. Thus, you need to put your keywords in an <h1> or <h2> tag and not just have text that “look” big and appear as a heading.
  • Most editors still use HTML tables to layout a page. This is an older technique replaced by Cascading Style Sheets.
  • HTML was meant for document structure not document design. However, WYSIWYG HTML editors work on exactly the opposite line of thought. One needs to understand that HTML determines the different elements on a page such as a heading, paragraph, list etc. How these elements will look is the prerogative of the web browser. Also, with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the design and “visual” of a web page is segregated from the actual content. Thus, the content of the web page resides in HTML while the look (colors, positioning etc.) lies in the CSS rules.
  • WYSIWYG editors simply do not provide enough support and help in optimizing your web site for search engines.
  •  The HTML code generated may not be compliant with existing web standards.
  • Some WYSIWYG editors even produce files with their own extensions.
  • Some WYSIWIG editors support CSS while editing and some don’t.
  •  Web pages designed using WYSIWYG editors are rigid. They do not stretch if you put more text or images on a page. Instead they overlap on each other. Some
  •  Often these web pages are difficult to optimize for search engines.
  • Usually the codes are very specific to the product you are using to generate them, which may create issues with their viewing, or editing.
  • You will not be able to control the elements on the page as precisely as you can with straight HTML coding. While you will likely still be able to edit all of your alt tags, you will probably have to go through leaps and bounds to get to them.

2. List down three more WYSIWYG web hosting services and their URL.

LESSON 9 ASSIGNMENT: COLLABORATIVE ICT DEVELOPMENT

  1. How does Trello help improve a team dynamics?
  • There are teams in Trello so that you could group similar members and boards. Trello gives room to track, plan, or organize anything we choose. By using Trello, not only does every team member benefit from their own product, but they each have a comprehensive understanding of it. The checklists within the cards help make decisions early on. You can also make a board team-private, which allows other team members to view a board without having to be a member of the board or make the board public. With all that has been said, Trello is believed to improve team dynamics.

2. Do you use other collaborative/social tools besides Trello? If yes, what are they and what do you use them for?

  • Yes, Facebook allows the people in my group to communicate their ideas.

LESSON 10 ASSIGNMENT: INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA

  1. What are other video hosting sites besides YouTube?
  • There are also other video hosting sites besides YouTube such as Vimeo, Dailymotion, Wistia, SproutVideo, Brightcove, and Vidyard.

2. Do you think the video you produced helped your site? Why or Why not?

  • I think the video helped my website because it made my blog more appealing and attractive to those who are viewing it.

LESSON 11 ASSIGNMENT: PLATFORM FOR CHANGE

  1. Name instances in the past where social media has kept you informed about the latest news around the country.
  • A few months ago, I was informed via Twitter that there were earthquakes that occurred in other parts of the Philippines. Facebook kept me updated in the sad events occurring in Marawi City.

2. Sign 1-2 petitions in Change.org. What is/are the petition(s) you signed using Change.org? Why is it important to you?

  • I signed the mental health awareness or “The Sighns Project” petition of my classmate. This is important to me because I believe that mental health at all ages should be taken seriously. Being mentally ill is a difficult thing to deal with and I want to be there for those people who need someone to talk to.

LESSON 12 ASSIGNMENT: PLANNING A SOCIAL CAMPAIGN

  1. What is the importance of a concept paper in a corporate setting?
  • Concept papers in a corporate setting are important because they are used for planning out specific details about your business. It defines what the business is or what it intends to be over time. Concept papers are also used to attract financing, attract team members, and manage the company.

2. Why is it important to follow the steps in the ICT project process?

  • It is important to follow the steps in ICT Project Process for organization of thoughts and ideas, and also we would know how to achieve our goals for our petition if we follow the step-by-step process.

LESSON 13: ICT PROJECT PUBLICATION AND STATISTICS

  1. What are other ways of getting site statistics? Give at least one and explain.
  • Google Analytics is a free analytics tool that allows you to track web traffic source, count, on-site behavior, clicks, acquisition, conversions and more.

2.  What are the statistics that proved vital for your site’s operation? Give at least three of them.

  • The statistics that proved vital for my site’s operation is the number of views, visitors, likes, and comments.

LESSON 14: ICT PROJECT MAINTENANCE

3. Were all the comments useful from your site’s visitors? Why or why not?

  • All the comments from my site’s visitors were useful because they let me know the insights of different people who visit my website, and they can also be used as a tool for the improvement of my site.

4. What were the best features of your site as commented by your visitors?

  • The best feature of my site as commented by my visitors is that my posts are entertaning and the coffees that I drink are a reflection of how much I love caffeine.

LESSON 15: THE DISADVANTAGES OF ICT

5. What are other cybercrimes that were not discussed in this lesson that you think students of your generation should be aware of? Why?

  • I think that one of the cybercrimes that we should be aware of is piracy. Directors and producers give a lot of time, effort, and money into making an original film. It is disrespectful to buy a pirated film which is being distributed without their consent.

6. Are the laws on copyright being implemented in the Philippines? Defend your answer.

  • This may be answerable by yes in some situations but most oftenly the answer is no. There are those items such as books and movies which are being copied and sold without the owner’s permission. Not all those who have violated the copyright law have been dealt with accordingly. Some tend to repeat their actions because they are not being caught.

7. As a future professional in your respective field, what are the things that you think ICT can do to help you in your field?

  • I plan to take the medical field in the future. ICT can help me by providing us advanced technologies which can be used in treating patients. It can also help us to keep in touch with them. ICT will be able to provide a breakthrough in our field.

8. Write a final video blog post about everything you have learned about ICT and its possible impact to our society. Talk about its positive and negative impacts and the youth’s role in helping promote its responsible use. Interview your classmates and other school personnel about it.

  • (Refer to final blog post at blog pages.)
